Is a September call up in Brooks Lee's future? The No. 1 prospect of the Minnesota Twins was promoted from Double-A Wichita to Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday, having earned the opportunity after destroying pitching at the Double-A level.
Lee, the 22-year-old shortstop who was the eighth overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, has hit .292/.365/.476 with 11 home runs and 61 RBI at Double-A this summer. His 31 doubles leads the league and he obliterated opposing pitchers in July by hitting .365 with five homers and 20 RBI.
In Keith Law's latest prospect rankings at MLB Pipeline Lee is ranked 17th overall. He's one of three Twins prospects in the top 25. Outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez is ranked 22nd and Walker Jenkins, the fifth overall pick in last month's draft, is 25th.
"A jump from college one spring to Double-A the next would be a big challenge for most players, but Lee’s pitch recognition has always been strong and it’s carried over into pro ball," Law wrote about Lee in his rankings.
"He’s still playing shortstop but I think he’ll move to third or second by the time he sees the majors. Lee’s a high-floor guy, as it’s very hard to imagine he’s less than a regular, although I think the only way he’s a true star is if he’s a consistent .300+ hitter and gets toward that [15-to-20 homer] ceiling."
According to the Saints, Lee is the first player drafted in the first round in 2022 to be promoted to the Triple-A level, although Zach Neto of the Angels went from Double-A straight to the MLB rather than making a stop at Triple-A.
