Twins trade two-time All-Star starter Jose Berrios to Blue Jays for two highly touted prospects

The Minnesota Twins are sending right-hander Jose Berrios to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson and infielder Austin Martin.

Berrios is 7-5 this season with a 3.48 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 121 2/3 innings. Over his six-year career, the 27-year-old is 55-43 with a 4.08 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 781 1/3 innings.

Berrios is playing on a one-year contract worth $6.1 million and has one more year of arbitration eligibility before becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season.

The Puerto Rican was drawing plenty of interest this week. In addition to the Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres pursued a deal for Berrios.

Berrios was one of several starters available at this year's trade deadline as Minnesota continues to sell amid an upsetting season. The Twins traded Nelson Cruz to the Tampa Bay Rays and might also move several other players before time is up.

As for the return, Martin was the fifth overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. He is among the top-rated prospects in all of baseball, while right-hander Woods Richardson has that distinction as well. The righty is among the top 100 prospects in the game himself and was one of the more promising arms in Toronto's system.
