Two-time All-Star Joey Gallo: 'I didn’t play well as a Yankee. I wish I had.'

The New York Yankees' Joey Gallo has resigned himself to the fact that he'll be suiting up with a different team after the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

While it remains to be seen where he'll play next, Gallo doesn't feel great about his tenure with the Yankees. In the year since he was acquired by New York in a July 2021 trade with the Texas Rangers, Gallo has a .159 batting average with 194 strikeouts in 139 games.

"I didn't live up to expectations," Gallo said Thursday, via The Athletic. "Every time I see a Yankees hat, every time I see a Yankees jersey, it's something I'm going to have to understand. I didn't play well as a Yankee. I wish I had."

On Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees were actively shopping Gallo but struggling to find many takers. The veteran outfielder's departure from New York was seemingly sealed by the team's acquisition of left fielder Andrew Benintendi from the Kansas City Royals.

In the Yankees' first game with Benintendi, Gallo started in right field. That position will eventually belong to Giancarlo Stanton again when the five-time All-Star returns from the 10-day injured list.

Gallo, 28, was a two-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner during his time with the Rangers.
