The New York Yankees got some bad news about one of the club's promising young infielders.

Oswald Peraza was New York's No. 2 prospect in 2022 but things haven't gone as planned for him so far. The young infielder has struggled at the big league level in 70 total games but was expected to get a larger opportunity in 2024.

Peraza got some bad news, though, and will miss at least six to eight weeks due to a shoulder injury. It's unclear what his role will be with the club once he's able to fully recover, but there are options available in free agency who could help fill in for him.

One player who was floated as an option and who could make a lot of sense is two-time All-Star Jean Segura by the New York Daily News Sports, Gary Phillips.

"Tough break for Oswald Peraza, who wasn't guaranteed a (Major League Baseball) bench spot before getting hurt," Phillips said. "The Yankees' other (infield) options include Oswaldo Cabrera, Kevin Smith, Josh VanMeter, Jahmai Jones, Jorbit Vivas, and Jeter Downs.

"A couple (utility) types still available in free agency: Donovan Solano, Jean Segura, and Adalberto MondesÍ. Solano (110 OPS+ over a career-high 134 games last year) is the best hitter of that bunch. He and Segura haven't played much (shortstop) in recent years."

Segura would make a lot of sense for New York. He had a rough 2023 season but is a career .289 hitter and has seen time at second base, third base, and shortstop throughout his big league career.

New York's offense was in a bad place in 2023 but seems to be better right now. Landing someone like Segura to fill in for Peraza could help add even more depth.
