Unvaccinated Yankees, Mets can’t play in home games under NYC rules

It was learned last week that, as things stand today, MLB players who aren't considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 cannot travel to Canada for road games against the Toronto Blue Jays per Canadian government guidelines.

Two American clubs are dealing with different coronavirus-related headaches during spring training.

Stefan Bondy and Dennis Young of the New York Daily News reported Tuesday that players on the New York Yankees and New York Mets not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 would not be eligible to play in home games today due to New York City's private sector employer mandate that prevents All-Star guard Kyrie Irving from featuring for the Brooklyn Nets in contests held at Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden.

The Nets were fined $50,000 on Monday for allowing Irving, who isn't vaccinated, to enter their locker room, considered a "workplace environment," after Sunday's 110-107 home win over the New York Knicks. Irving was permitted to enter Barclays Center and sit courtside as a spectator.

It's currently unknown which players on the Yankees and Mets are unvaccinated in the closing days of winter, but some have assumed Yankees slugger Aaron Judge may be among those individuals.

According to the Daily News, Mayor Eric Adams "has not indicated that he’s considering dropping the private sector mandate," and a spokesperson added that "the city would not be carving out individual exceptions" and that "the fact that the baseball teams play outside has no bearing on the mandate."

The Yankees are scheduled to host the rival Boston Red Sox for Opening Day on April 7, while the Mets' home opener is set for Apr. 15 versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.
