Was Yankees' Jhony Brito tipping pitches in blowout loss to Twins?

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone hinted that rookie Jhony Brito may have been tipping his pitches during Thursday's blowout loss to the Minnesota Twins. 

"We dive into everything and see if we can find any tells or whatever," Boone said of Brito's brief performance in the 11-2 defeat, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I haven’t gone back and looked at all the pitches, but it seems like he was missing over the plate and elevated. But we’ll go back and look at everything for sure." 

Brito's outing at Yankee Stadium Thursday evening was surprising, if not alarming, largely because the 25-year-old was somewhat of a revelation over his first two starts of the season. He allowed a single run across 10 innings of work and notched back-to-back victories. 

To compare, Brito failed to survive the first inning against Minnesota and surrendered seven runs on six hits. He began the day with a 0.90 ERA but saw that number reach 6.75 before he hit the showers to ideally wash away a start he and the Yankees hope to forget. 

"Just looked like a lot of pitches out and over the plate," Boone said. "And it seemed like he was ball one too much, too, behind in the count, leaving the sinker elevated too much. Obviously a rough night." 

Boone added that he believes the right-hander will quickly bounce back because he has "a great head on his shoulders." To his credit, Brito made no excuses and insisted he will work to correct any fixable mistakes.

"Nights like this are going to happen in baseball. It’s how you come back," Brito remarked, according to Bryan Hoch of the MLB website. "I can tell you tomorrow, I’m going to sit down with the pitching coach. We’re going to go over the video and make the adjustments, whatever might be necessary."

Catcher Kyle Higashioka noted he would help Brito review the start "with a clear head and go over what went wrong." 

The 8-5 Yankees next host the 9-4 Twins on Friday night.
