Daniel Vogelbach and the Milwaukee Brewers entered Sunday’s home game against the St. Louis Cardinals with an 83-54 record and well on their way to the National League Central title. In fact, Milwaukee boasted a 10-game lead over the second-place Cincinnati Reds in the division.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals’ playoff aspirations have been fading big-time recently. They sit at 69-65 and 2.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League.
Vogelbach made sure that these two trends continued when he took to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth.
St. Louis held a 5-2 lead with closer Alex Reyes on the mound. The bases were loaded with one out, setting the stage for some heroics on the part of Vogelbach.
Yes, that’s a pinch-hit walk-off grand slam from the veteran slugger. It’s obviously something we don’t see every day around the baseball world, and it had fans inside American Family Field losing their minds. To be honest, the call might have been even better than the walk-off blast.
The crazy thing here is that Vogelbach entered Sunday’s action hitting just .216 with a .701 OPS in 70 games for the Brewers this season. Talk about a shocking end result to this rivalry matchup.
