The Chicago White Sox have unfortunately become all too familiar with injuries occurring as players make their way to first base. In the past year alone, the frequency of White Sox players being sidelined due to injuries sustained just 90 feet away from home plate at 35th/Shields is too numerous to count on one hand. Yet, another instance of this phenomenon occurred on Sunday.

The latest of these injuries is of a rather peculiar variety. While hustling out a sacrifice bunt during the White Sox 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, Alberto attempted to call himself safe on the play as he crossed first base. Unfortunately for Alberto, he wasn't safe. To add injury to insult, the White Sox utility man also injured his shoulder in the process. While White Sox fans are rather used to players getting injured on their way to first, it hasn't been in this manner before. Certainly, not something you see every day at the ballpark. You can watch the play happen right here courtesy of Nick Murawski on Twitter:

Although he left the ballgame in what looked to be extreme pain, Alberto's status after the game was officially listed as day-to-day per James Fegan of The Athletic . Should Alberto miss an extended period of time, it remains to be seen who would be called up to take his roster spot. The White Sox are currently without Elvis Andrus who is currently also on the IL, and second baseman Lenyn Sosa has largely struggled during his time in the big leagues this season.
