It’s not too often Boston Red Sox fans give an opposing player a standing ovation. That’s all thrown out the window when said player’s last name is Yastrzemski.
Making his first appearance at Fenway Park, Mike Yastrzemski of the San Francisco Giants batted leadoff and played left field Tuesday evening.
It’s notable in that his grandfather, Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, played 23 seasons for the Boston Red Sox. He remains one of the greatest players and the biggest fan favorite in Beantown.
Once the younger Yastrzemski took to the plate for the first time in Boston, Red Sox fans gave him a standing ovation.
This really is a memorable moment for everyone involved. With the older Yastrzemski on hand, his grandson fulfilled a lifelong dream to play at Fenway.
It comes after Mike had toiled in the minors for years as a member of the Boston Red Sox organization.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy knew full well the history that was being made Tuesday. It’s why he had the the youngster batting leadoff and playing the same left field position his granddad had manned for a near quarter century in Boston.
Yeah, that was a goosebumps moment for the baseball lover in us all.
