Watch: Phillies' Jose Alvarez carted off after taking line drive to groin
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarez was carted off the field after taking a line drive to the groin in the bottom of the fifth inning of Thursday's doubleheader opener versus the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto's Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit what ESPN reported to be a 105.3 mph shot at Alvarez, who bravely recovered to get the out at first base before he collapsed to the ground in pain. A cart assisted him off the field.
Toronto defeated Philadelphia 3-2 in Buffalo.
Alvarez, 31, has been Philadelphia's best reliever during the pandemic-shortened campaign. Following Thursday's out, he holds a 1.42 ERA and six strikeouts in eight appearances.
