Watch: Phillies score two runs thanks to ugly Diamondbacks error

Emmanuel Rivera thought he’d thrown out Kyle Schwarber at home. Instead, two runs scored.

With the bases loaded, the Arizona Diamondbacks played the infield in. When Rivera corralled Alec Bohm’s bouncer in foul territory, he had time to force the slow-footed Schwarber at home.

But his throw short-hopped catcher Gabriel Montero, and Schwarber slid in safely. Trea Turner never stopped running from second, and he slid in before the Diamondbacks recovered the ball.

Rivera was playing third over Gold Glove third baseman Evan Longoria, who started at DH. It was more of a bad hop than a truly bad throw, but Arizona manager Torey Lovullo might be second-guessing his lineup decision after the game.

The only consolation for Arizona was that Montero threw out Bohm trying to advance to second. That meant reliever Ryan Thompson kept the score at 4-2 by retiring J.P. Realmuto and Nick Castellanos.

Thompson did his job, Rivera didn’t. The Diamondbacks have some work to do in Game 4.
