Watch: Top Cubs prospect finds epic way to notch first Double-A HR

Chicago Cubs top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong found the most epic way possible to notch Double-A home run No. 1 on Wednesday.

Facing an 0-2 count, Crow-Armstrong gutted out a 16-pitch at-bat before capping off the fight with a grand slam.

According to Ben Weinrib of MLB.com, an at-bat like Crow-Armstrong's is extremely rare, even at the Major League level. Since pitch-count tracking came into being in earnest in 1998, only Alex Cora (2004), Terrmel Sledge (2004) and Jermaine Dye (1998) have homered in an at-bat of 16 pitches or more. None of those three hit grand slams.

Initially selected 19th overall by the New York Mets in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Cubs acquired Crow-Armstrong in exchange for Javier Baez and Trevor Williams in 2021.

MLB Pipeline ranks Crow-Armstrong as the 25th-best prospect in all of baseball. While Crow-Armstrong does have a little pop in his bat, his defense is what turns heads.

"Scouts give top-of-the-scale grades to his center-field skills as he exhibits tremendous range from gap to gap with his combination of plus speed and precision reads and routes, and he completes the package with solid arm strength," MLB.com's scouting report notes.

Crow-Armstrong has impressed this season, playing for the Cubs' Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies. In 10 games, Crow-Armstrong has gone 14-of-43 at the plate, recording two doubles and triples with a home run and four RBI. The speedy outfielder has also wreaked havoc on the basepaths, successfully swiping on 7-of-8 attempts.
