The Chicago White Sox continue to outdo themselves when it comes to baseball blunders this season.

The White Sox were down 2-1 against the Detroit Tigers in the top of the ninth inning at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich.

With White Sox shortstop Paul DeJong representing the tying run on first base, pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi flew out to center field. DeJong took off on contact, seemingly under the impression that there were two outs.

Except, there was only one. DeJong realized his mistake after jogging past second and was easily doubled off as he scrambled back toward first base.

DeJong's ill-advised trot across the basepaths for thinking there were two outs became somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Former White Sox announcer Jason Benetti was fittingly on the call for the contest. Benetti, who was the team’s play-by-play man from 2016 to 2023, announced his decision to move to the Tigers’ booth last November.

“And the White Sox have yet another play that typifies their season. 2-1, Tigers. Thank you very much. How in the world does this happen?” Benetti said after DeJong’s baserunning mistake.

With Chicago’s South Side team sitting in last place by a wide margin, Benetti seems to have made the move at exactly the right time.
