If there was ever a time for the New York Yankees to call up catching prospect Austin Wells, it might be after the week he had at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Sure, Wells only got promoted to Triple-A on July 21, but his production this week against Worcester was something incredible.

In five games, he batted just .272 (6-for-22). But, four of his six hits went for home runs.

He saved the best for Sunday. He had two home runs in the game — a grand slam and a three-run homer — to finish with seven RBI in a 13-1 victory.

For the week he ended up with 11 RBI.

Wells is now the No. 8 prospect in the Yankees’ system, per MLB.com, and one of the Top 10 catching prospects in all of baseball.

Since his promotion to Triple-A, his production has been at its best this season. He’s slashed .260/.351/.479/.830 with four home runs and 18 RBI in just 25 games.

That’s a better slash line than he put up at Somerset this season — .237/.327/.443/.770 with 11 home runs and 50 RBI. He started the season with five injury rehab games with Class-A Tampa, so he’s played at three different levels of the Yankees’ minor-league system this season.

Wells was the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Arizona.

With roster set to expand on Sept. 1, and the deadline to allow rookie call-ups to remain rookies in 2024, the time might be now to give Wells a few reps at Yankee Stadium.
