What 2B Trevor Story's absence means for Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are off to a rough start in 2023. Second baseman Trevor Story recently had a procedure done on the UCL in his right elbow and is expected to miss four to six months.

Story shared with reporters that he believes he will play in 2023 (h/t: MLB.com), but his extended absence could complicate things in the infield for the Red Sox.

Options at shortstop are Kiké Hernandez and Christian Arroyo. Per MLB.com, Hernandez is expected to get the nod. Both mainly played in the outfield last season, but Hernandez played second when Story was sidelined with a hand injury.

Hernandez grew up playing shortstop and is excited to get the opportunity to play his "favorite" position full time. That nice, but he's only played 18 games total -- including 10 last season -- at shortstop with the Red Sox.

Since starting his MLB career in 2014, Hernandez has never been a full-time starter at the infield's most important spot.

For second base, the options are Arroyo or Niko Goodrum, who was signed this offseason. Neither has played a full season in his MLB career, and neither is great with the glove.

If Story can play this season, it will give the Red Sox time to improve the depth. If he can't, it could be a long season.
