White Sox 2B Nick Madrigal has season-ending hamstring surgery

Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal won't play again until spring training 2022 at the earliest.

The White Sox confirmed Tuesday that Madrigal has undergone season-ending surgery to repair proximal tendon tears in his right hamstring.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Madrigal suffered the setback racing to first base in an attempt to beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of last Wednesday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The 24-year-old was batting .305 with two home runs and 21 RBI across 54 games this season before the injury.

As John Grochowski noted for the Chicago Sun-Times, Madrigal was previously placed on the 60-day injured list before Tuesday's announcement.

Chicago began Tuesday's action at 41-25 and in first place in the American League Central standings, 4.5 games ahead of the second-place Cleveland Indians.
