The Chicago White Sox announced a roster move involving catchers before Sunday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. Carlos Perez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and joined the team in Cleveland to back up Yasmani Grandal. The Sox' primary backup, Seby Zavala, went on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 3) with a left oblique strain.

Perez will begin his third stint with the White Sox. Chicago called him up in June and July. Between July 1 and July 23, Perez notched just one hit and one walk in 12 plate appearances. Over the last two years, the 26-year-old has appeared in 13 games and made six starts.

There's no telling how long Zavala's IL stint will last, as the recovery time from an oblique injury is unpredictable. There has been no indication that Zavala suffered the injury during Saturday night's fracas.

However, it would be prudent for the White Sox to consider a longer stay in the majors for Perez. Zavala is out of minor-league options and is largely ineffective at the plate. Starter Yasmani Grandal is set to become a free agent after the season and most likely won't return to the South Side.

The Sox also acquired catcher Korey Lee from the Houston Astros in the Kendall Graveman trade. Lee is in Charlotte and should be in line for the next promotion a catcher receives in the organization.

What's On Tap Next?

Expect to see more minor league call-ups as the season progresses. The White Sox have a number of veterans on expiring contracts who will likely be DFA'd or claimed off waivers. Chicago traded away a large chunk of its MLB pitching staff and slugger Jake Burger. Giving the minor-league talent some playing time in the big leagues would be wise.
