White Sox closer Liam Hendriks lands on IL with forearm strain

The Chicago White Sox placed closer Liam Hendriks on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain retroactive to Saturday, the team announced Tuesday.

Hendriks, 33, earned All-Star honors in two of the last three seasons and has been off to a strong start in 2022, as well. He leads the AL with 16 saves and has allowed eight runs in 25 appearances. Hendriks has 37 strikeouts on the year with eight walks.

On Sunday, White Sox manager Tony La Russa told reporters Hendriks was not available "at all" and Kendall Graveman would be relied upon as the closer, if needed. Graveman came in for the White Sox on both Sunday and Monday, but neither appearance was a save situation.

While Chicago will be without Hendriks, the team also announced Tuesday that Joe Kelly has been activated from the 15-day IL.

Kelly, 34, joined the White Sox on a two-year deal in March and appeared in seven games before he was placed on the IL due to a hamstring injury. So far this season, Kelly has allowed six runs in 5.2 innings pitched. Five of those runs came in one inning against the New York Yankees.
