The Chicago White Sox are making moves.
Chicago is in an interesting spot and seems to be quickly approaching a rebuild. While this is the case, the White Sox still have made some intriguing additions this offseason to add more depth across the organization.
The White Sox continued to add and reportedly signed former Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves outfielder Kevin Pillar, according to Major League Baseball Trade Rumors' Steve Adams.
"Source: White Sox are signing veteran (outfielder) Kevin Pillar to a minor league deal," Adams said. "He’ll earn $3MM if he makes the big league roster. Pillar hit .228/.248/.416 with 9 HR in 208 PAs with (Atlanta Braves) last year. (right-handed) bat. Not the plus-plus (center fielder) he once was but still rated well in corners in 2023."
Pillar joined the Red Sox in free agency ahead of the 2020 COVID-shortened campaign and only appeared in 30 games but impressed before being traded to the Rockies. He has bounced around ever since but appeared in 81 games in 2023 with the Braves.
He provides outfield depth for the White Sox with big-league upside. He slashed .228/.248/.416 last season with nine home runs and 32 RBIs while seeing time at all three outfield spots.
It's unclear if he will make the White Sox's big-league club, but it wouldn't be too surprising. Chicago seems to be approaching a rebuild and likely will have a lot of young players see time in 2024. It doesn't hurt to add a veteran like Pillar to help show the young players the ropes as well.
