MLB announced Monday that Johnny Cueto earned American League Player of the Week honors for Aug. 15-21. The Chicago White Sox’ veteran hurler picked up a pair of wins and went eight-plus innings in each of his outings during that span.

On Aug. 15 against the Houston Astros, Cueto allowed two runs (one earned) in the first inning but settled down to limit the damage. He tossed eight innings of six-hit ball, walked one, and struck out three against the AL’s best team. The White Sox put together a valiant comeback in the eighth inning and took the series opener from Houston.

In his most recent start, Cueto was one out shy of a complete-game shutout of the Cleveland Guardians. The right-hander went 8.2 innings and allowed no runs, five hits, and no walks while striking out two. Liam Hendriks entered the game to record the final out and Cueto picked up the win.

Johnny Cueto now holds a 6-5 record and 2.58 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) this season. He has been a rock for the Chicago White Sox’ rotation, recording 15 quality starts. He hasn’t always been rewarded for his efforts, but his AL Player of the Week award was well-deserved.
