The light-hitting Chicago White Sox need plenty of offensive help, and they're hoping Tommy Pham can provide some of it. With the veteran outfielder set to join the roster, the White Sox are reportedly designating Kevin Pillar for assignment.

White Sox Outfield Outlook

Pillar joined the White Sox on a minor-league deal in the offseason, was released at the end of Spring Training, and then re-signed on a big-league deal. Initially viewed as a fourth outfielder option, Pillar was thrust into more action than anticipated due to injuries early in the season.

He slashed .160/.290/.360 with one home run and two doubles in 32 plate appearances across 17 games. Those numbers along with Robbie Grossman's on-base ability (.322 OBP in 59 plate appearances) likely made Pillar the odd man out as Pham enters the picture.

Despite posting strong numbers for the Arizona Diamondbacks during their 2023 World Series run, Pham went unsigned through Spring Training and into the 2024 season. The White Sox inked him to a minor-league pact on April 16 and sent him to Triple-A Charlotte to knock the rust off. Pham appeared in four games for the Knights and went 5-for-17 with one double and two stolen bases.

The White Sox' problems are widespread, but their lack of offense has been a glaring issue with an MLB-worst 56 runs scored. Pham won't be a cure-all by any means, but he figures to offer more pop than Pillar.
