The Chicago White Sox’s pitching plans received further clarity on Saturday morning. Manager Tony La Russa announced Vince Velasquez will start Tuesday’s home opener against the Seattle Mariners.

Seeking starting rotation depth, the White Sox signed Velasquez to a one-year, $3 million deal in mid-March. The team surely never envisioned him getting the ball for the home opener, but Lance Lynn’s knee injury has forced White Sox to tap further into the depth chart.

For his career, Vince Velasquez owns a 31-44 record, 4.95 ERA, 4.56 FIP, 1.392 WHIP, and 9.9 K/9 rate in 651 innings across parts of seven MLB seasons. The righty struggled last season between the Phillies and Padres, posting a 3-9 record, 6.30 ERA, 5.88 FIP, 1.484 WHIP, and 9.6 K/9 rate in 94.1 innings (21 starts).

The Chicago White Sox home opener takes place on Tuesday, April 10 as the Seattle Mariners come to town. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 PM CT and the game will air on NBC Sports Chicago.
