Relief pitcher Alex Reyes Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The tender deadline is always full of surprises. For the Brewers, they ended up holding onto 14 of their 18 arbitration eligible players. They also gained a new pitcher via trade in Javy Guerra. However, across the league there are now some intriguing players who are available. One of those is a former division rival relief pitcher from the Cardinals. That is Alex Reyes. The Brewers should look to target him.

Why was Alex Reyes non-tendered by the Cardinals?

Injuries have plagued Alex Reyes throughout his Cardinal career. The 28 year old made his major league debut in 2016, but he has pitched just 145 innings throughout his career. His career ERA sits at 2.86, he has 31 saves, and an 11.0 K:9 ratio.  Unfortunately, he just seemingly cannot stay healthy.

Tommy John surgery wiped out the entire 2017 season for Reyes. Upon returning, he tore a tendon in his LAT and underwent surgery for that in 2018.  He struggled a bit in 2019, was good in 2020, and ultimately had the most success out of the bullpen in 2021 as he collected 29 saves. In 2022, he again underwent shoulder surgery that did not allow him to pitch.

The Cardinals, along with Reyes, certainly have to be frustrated with all the injuries. This likely played a large role in the decision to non-tender him a contract for the 2023 season. MLB Trade Rumors has him projected to earn $2.85M during the 2023 season.

When healthy, Reyes has elite stuff. He still touches the upper 90’s with his fastball and is a strikeout pitcher. Control has been an issue for him, but a young arm like his could be very beneficial in the Brewers bullpen.
