Yankees' Aaron Boone addresses alarming number of ejections

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone understands that earning three ejections this spring and two within a week is only worth so much to a club looking to climb up the American League East standings.

"I don’t want to keep that pace," Boone admitted during his latest appearance on the "Talkin’ Yanks" podcast, per John Healy of Audacy. "I will try to slow that pace. We’ll just have to see how it plays out. Hopefully, consider it at this point a small sample size."

Boone was tossed from a game against the Cleveland Guardians last month for arguing an overturned call. On May 15, the 50-year-old was ejected for arguing the strike zone during a contest at the Toronto Blue Jays that generated headlines due to slugger Aaron Judge glancing toward either the dugout or the first base coach during an at-bat.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Boone picked up his third ejection during a 4-1 win at the Cincinnati Reds this past Sunday after he protested a runner being allowed to score due to a video review of a foul-ball call that was overturned.

"I didn’t get an explanation [on the replay]," Boone explained during the podcast about his latest actions. "I was trying to be clear I’m not arguing the replay, I was just trying to see what they said to [the umpires]. What was the explanation? They just kept saying you can’t argue replay, so I clapped back a little bit about that."

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner recently made it known he loves how Boone's players want to play and win for the skipper. Nevertheless, Steinbrenner probably isn't thrilled that Boone is on pace to end the regular season with 10 ejections.

The Yankees entered Tuesday trailing the first-place Tampa Bay Rays by six games in the AL East standings. He'll look to keep his cool when 29-20 New York opens a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles (31-16, three games back of the Rays) on Tuesday night.
