Yankees acquire RHP Clay Holmes from Pirates

The New York Yankees dropped three of four contests to the Boston Red Sox and fell nine full games behind their hated rival in the American League East standings.

The Bombers responded by adding some bullpen help at the start of the week and ahead of Friday's trade deadline.

Per the MLB website, the Yankees have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor-league infielders Diego Castillo and Hoy Park.

Holmes has gone 3-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 42 innings this season, and he accumulated a career 5.57 ERA during his four campaigns with the Pirates. According to Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Holmes does have a history of arm injuries but evolved into a solid reliever for the perpetually rebuilding Pirates.

It's likely the Yankees aren't finished adding to the roster as they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Bronx Bombers have repeatedly been linked with Colorado Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story in trade rumors, and it's believed the Yankees could shift Story to center field.

The Yankees trail the Rays by eight games in the division standings.
