Yankees' Gio Urshela out three months after elbow surgery
New York Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela might miss some of spring training after having surgery on his elbow.
The Yankees announced Friday that Urshela underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow and will be out for three months.
Spring training is set to begin in February, so Urshela won't have too much time to prepare for the 2021 campaign, which begins in April, when he returns.
The 29-year-old was hindered by his throwing arm for much of the 2020 season. The Yankees placed him on the 10-day injured list in September with a bone spur in his right elbow and he returned later in the month after missing 11 games.
During the pandemic-shortened season, Urhsela averaged .298 at the plate with 30 RBI and six home runs. In two seasons with the Yankees, he's averaging .310 with 104 RBI and 27 homers.
General manager Brian Cashman initially said Urshela wouldn't need surgery after a season-ending loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in October.
The native of Colombia is set to make $4.35 million in 2021 and is eligible for a second year of arbitration in 2022.
