Yankees hire ex-Mets manager Luis Rojas as third-base coach

When the New York Mets announced shortly after the end of the MLB regular season that Luis Rojas was out as manager, they added that he could remain with the team in a different role.

Rojas is indeed staying in New York, but differently than many expected around the end of September.

The New York Yankees announced Monday that Rojas is joining the franchise as third-base coach. The 40-year-old is replacing Phil Nevin, who did not have his contract renewed following his questionable decision to wave Aaron Judge home during what became an American League Wild-Card round loss to the rival Boston Red Sox.

Rojas had spent the previous 16 seasons working within the Mets organization and served as their manager the last two campaigns. In total, the Mets went 103-119 under Rojas and missed the playoffs in each of his two years in charge. It was widely assumed even before October the Mets would go in a different direction and decline the 2022 option attached to Rojas' contract.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone received a three-year extension from the club last month.
