The New York Yankees are unable to execute any Major League deals due to the lockout, but they’ve been active in finding Minor League talent trying to offer some depth at positions of vulnerability.
Recently, general manager Brian Cashman inked David Freitas to a minor-league contract, according to the MLB.com transactions tracker. Given Freitas ended his 2020-21 season on a minor-league deal, he was eligible to sign a fresh contract. He spent time with Tampa Bay‘s AAA affiliate last season, featuring in 16 games, hitting .245 with three homers and eight RBIs.
Freitas has appeared in three MLB seasons, playing for the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers several years ago. Over 143 Major League plate appearances, he slashed .200/.268/.288.
The 32-year-old backstop played for the Korean Baseball Organization last year before making the move to Tampa’s minor-league system. With the Yankees unsure of Gary Sanchez’s future, they are adding plenty of depth to supplement any deficiencies for the future.
However, Freitas is nothing more than a depth signing and competitor for a minor-league slot moving forward.
