Yankees lefty Zack Britton goes on IL with strained elbow

New York Yankees left-handed relief pitcher Zack Britton is having a tough year. 

Ahead of Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that Britton is going on the injured list with a strained left elbow after he experienced discomfort on Sunday. According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Boone added the Yankees will evaluate the 33-year-old this week to determine what comes next. 

"Now we're in the process of getting a number of opinions to make sure everyone is on the same page about next steps and everything," Boone explained. "We'll probably know more over the next few days in that regard." 

Britton didn't make his season debut until June 12 after he required arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip in his left elbow in March. He's been inconsistent when healthy and even removed himself from the Yanks' closer role earlier this month. He hits the IL with an 0-1 record, 5.89 ERA and one save in 22 appearances. 

The Yankees began Monday evening at 72-52 and holding an American League wild-card playoff berth.
