Yankees legend Derek Jeter talks infamous 'Derek Eater' headline

Retired New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter suffered a fractured left ankle during the 2012 MLB playoffs and then had insult added to that injury the following month when the New York Post referred to him as "Derek Eater" after a picture surfaced showing that the shortstop appeared to be carrying some extra weight.

Per Michael Blinn of the Post, Jeter discussed that infamous headline during a Wednesday appearance on the "Pardon My Take" podcast.

"You talk about trust, right? After that came out, I was actually in Miami at a hotel," Jeter said of the newspaper headline and unflattering photo. "Afterwards, I went up to a couple of friends, I was like, 'Why you guys didn’t tell me? Did I gain weight or something?'"

Jeter added a humorous tale about how the headline impacted fan interactions for a time.

"I was downstairs at the hotel restaurant and I had a huge breakfast, and somebody came over and — you know how you see someone sorta looking at you — and they had a paper in their hand and they’re looking at me and they’re looking at my plate, and then I saw what was on the front page," Jeter explained.

Gothamist slammed the Post at the time for "fat-shaming" a "husky" Jeter, and Jeter himself seemed to hit back at comments about his weight via a December picture:

That same month, Jeter told ESPN Radio (h/t New York Post) he thought the "Derek Eater" headline was "pretty funny."
