The New York Mets seemed like they were set up for multiple years after getting hot and making a run to the World Series in 2015.
That season was the first time they had made the playoffs since 2006.
The Mets had a group of young players that seemingly would keep them in championship contention for a while, but that ultimately did not come to fruition.
Much of the underachieving came from injuries to their starting pitching unit that contained Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
Still, Syndergaard became a star despite battling injuries.
He had a 3.03 ERA across 25 starts in 2018 and 4.28 ERA over his 32 starts in 2019, but Tommy John surgery kept him out of the entire 2020 season and limited him to two starts in 2021.
He was tendered an offer by New York for 2022, but he signed a one-year, $21 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels before they dealt him to the Mets' division rival Philadelphia Phillies for the second half of the year.
He appeared in 10 games for the Phillies in the regular season and also was used in the playoffs.
However, Syndergaard massively struggled in 2023, posting a 7.16 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers and a 5.40 after he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians.
He was ultimately released, which called into question his future as a Major League pitcher.
But, Jon Heyman of The New York Post is reporting his market has started to heat up in free agency with multiple teams, including the New York Yankees, having interest in the righty.
"Yankees are among about 15 teams that have gone to watch one of Noah Syndergaard's pen sessions. Their interest level is unknown but he was said to be in the mid 90's," he posted on social media.
It seems unlikely he would be used in the starting rotation for the Yankees, despite them searching for arms throughout the offseason.
There appears to still be a market for the Mets' former star pitcher and he could find himself on another MLB roster in 2024.
