Yankees pitcher carted off field after taking terrifying line drive to the head vs. Pirates

New York Yankees pitcher Anthony Misiewicz went down after taking a line drive to the head Friday in a terrifying scene at PNC Park.

In the sixth inning, Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Ji Hwan Bae roped a stinging frozen rope up the middle off Misiewicz, which made such a thundering impact off his head that the ball landed in right field. The ball was traveling at 100.6 mph off the bat of Bae before making contact with Misiewicz, only adding to the horror.

There is footage of the incident, but fair warning, it is graphic.

Writhing in pain, Misiewicz rolled on the ground, grabbing his head before being attended to by the Yankees trainers. Eventually, a staggered Misiewicz made it back to his feet but was taken off the field via a cart as a precaution.

Before leaving the field, Misiewicz appeared to crack a smile and gave a thumbs-up while holding a towel to his head. He even got a souvenir on his way out. While his teammates gave him their well wishes, shortstop Anthony Volpe appeared to hand Misiewicz the ball that had just crashed into his skull.

Selected off waivers from the Detroit Tigers in July, it's a tough break for Misiewicz, who recently received a call-up after spending time with the Yankees Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Misiewicz made his first appearance for the Yankees last Sunday, earning the win in a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Then, on Tuesday, Misiewicz was credited with a hold after pitching his second consecutive hitless inning in a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees are the third team Misiewicz has pitched for this season, along with the Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Entering play Friday, Misiewicz was 2-0 with a 6.97 ERA over 10.1 innings.
