Yankees place right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga on injured list with strained rotator cuff

The New York Yankees have placed Jonathan Jonathan Loaisiga on the injured list with a strained rotator cuff, manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday, according to Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated.

New York recalled Albert Abreu to replace Loaisiga on the roster.

Loaisiga last pitched on Sept. 3 against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out one batter and allowing a home run in 1.1 innings. His absence is a huge blow to the Yankees' bullpen, as he's arguably been the team's most reliable late-inning option throughout the season.

The 26-year-old is 9-4 this season with a 2.25 ERA, 1.029 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 68 innings.

In addition to Loaisiga, Domingo German, Michael King, Zack Britton, Darren O'Day, Miguel Andujar, Clint Frazier, Aaron Hicks and Tim Locastro remain on the injured list.

The Yankees are second in the American League East with a 78-57 record, 7.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. They own the first wild-card spot in the AL with a half-game lead on the Boston Red Sox.
