Yankees place SP Luis Severino on 15-day IL with strained right lat

On Thursday, the New York Yankees placed starting pitcher Luis Severino on the 15-day injured list with a low-grade lat strain.

Severino exited his start on Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Reds in the third inning with what the team called shoulder tightness. His velocity was noticeably down after allowing four runs, including back-to-back-to-back home runs, over the first two innings. Severino returned for the top half of the third inning but left the game after throwing a few warm-up pitches.

The 28-year-old suffered a lat injury in 2019, forcing him to miss most of the season. However, the Yankees are categorizing this injury as "low grade."

Severino has had bad luck with injuries over the past few seasons. Ahead of the 2022 season, Severino had pitched in only seven games for the Yankees from 2019-21. The right-hander missed all of 2020 and most of 2021 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

This season, Severino is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 16 starts for the Yankees.

The Yankees also reinstated right-handed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga from the 15-day IL and selected the contract of Ryan Weber from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

Loaisiga, 27, is 1-2 with a 7.02 ERA in 18 appearances for the Yankees this season.

Weber, 31, has made just two appearances for the Yankees in 2022, allowing an earned run off two hits in 4.2 innings.
