The New York Yankees placed right-handed reliever Albert Abreu on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation before Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a corresponding move, they recalled right-hander Luke Bard from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Also Sunday, manager Aaron Boone said third baseman Josh Donaldson won't be in the starting lineup against the Blue Jays after being a late scratch from Saturday night's game with a stomach bug. Boone said Donaldson should be able to come off the bench, if needed.

Abreu has been part of a bullpen by committee that Boone has employed in trying to find some success during a freefall that has seen the team lose 15 of the past 19 games. The Yankees claimed Abreu off waivers after the Kansas City Royals designated him for assignment in June.

The Texas Rangers had put him on the DFA list in May.

Abreu, 26, is 2-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 21 appearances with New York. He's thrown 25 innings and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 24 hits with six walks and 26 strikeouts.

This is his second stint with the Yankees, having pitched for them in 2020-21.

Abreu pitched the ninth inning of Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Blue Jays, surrendering one run on a solo homer by Matt Chapman.

As for the 31-year-old Bard, the Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 5 and assigned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. There, he was 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA, making three appearances and giving up three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

With the Rays, he was 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA in eight appearances (14 innings).
