The Yankees picked up their second win of the regular season against the Houston Astros on Friday night 7-1. Despite the win, the team dealt with a few scary injuries, notably to Gleyber Torres, who was hit by a pitch late in the contest, sending him to a knee grasping his hand.
Torres was hit on his throwing hand, which prompted him to leave the game after spending the next inning in the infield trying to push his way through. The pain was too much to maintain, so Torres pulled himself and headed to the x-ray room to get the damage report.
Yankees’ Gleyber Torres Dodged a Bullet
Fortunately, x-rays came back negative on Torres’s right hand, so it seems as if he dodged a bullet.
However, he likely suffered a serious bruise, which could keep him out for a few days. Grasping the bat and throwing may be a little difficult for him until the pain subsides. The Yankees will proceed with caution so as not to compromise his health early on in the season.
The 27-year-old is in a contract year and hoping to make a significant impact. Over nine plate appearances, Torres has struggled to get going but is helping supplement the lead-off spot in DJ LeMahieu’s absence.
Aside from Torres, the Yankees were also a bit concerned about Juan Soto, who twisted his ankle and was trying to stretch out in the outfield. Fortunately, the injury isn’t serious, and he indicated he would be playing on Saturday evening after the win.
