The Yankees appear to have made a decision on their final outfield spot.
On Wednesday, the Yankees signed outfielder Franchy Cordero to a major league contract, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The deal will pay Cordero $1 million in the big-leagues and $180,000 in the minor leagues.
Barring any last minute moves, Cordero is likely to be on the Yankees' Opening Day roster. Cordero brings versatility, having experience at all three outfield spots and first base.
It initially looked as though the last spot would come down to Rafael Ortega or Estevan Florial. Instead, the Yankees released Ortega and will likely designate Florial for assignment, as he is out of options.
As for Cordero, he had a strong spring with the Baltimore Orioles. In 18 Grapefruit League games, Cordero slashed .413/.426/.674 with a 1.100 OPS, two home runs and nine RBIs. The Orioles released Cordero on March 27.
Shortly thereafter, the Yankees picked him up and he is now expected to be on their major league roster at least until Harrison Bader returns from an oblique strain.
Cordero, 28, spent the past two seasons with the American League East rival Boston Red Sox. Last year, Cordero had a .697 OPS, eight homers and 29 RBIs for Boston in 84 games.
Cordero has also played for the San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals in his six-year major league career.
