Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo tests positive for COVID-19

New York Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo has tested positive for COVID-19, manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday, according to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler.

Boone added that Rizzo has mild symptoms and is feeling achy. The 32-year-old said in June he had not been vaccinated, and it's unclear if that has changed.

Rizzo testing positive will prevent him from playing in the Field of Dreams game on Thursday and playing in Chicago next weekend.

The Florida native, who is a cancer survivor, is considered high-risk, and the Yankees are hoping his symptoms don't worsen over the next several days.

Rizzo joins catcher Gary Sanchez and starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery as Yankees players to recently test positive for the virus.

The Yankees activated Luke Voit (knee) off the injured list to take Rizzo's spot on the roster.

New York acquired Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs at last month's trade deadline. In nine games for the Bronx Bombers, he's hitting .281/.400/.563 with three home runs and six RBI.

Rizzo's arrival in the Bronx has helped the Yanks, who are 8-2 in their last 10 games, turn things around. At one point, it seemed as though New York wouldn't make the playoffs. Now, the team is very much in the running for a playoff spot with a 61-49 record, 1.5 games out of an American League wild-card position.
