Yankees TV broadcast mistakenly gives 'condolences' for New York sports journalist who's still alive
During Sunday's television broadcast of the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays game on the YES Network, Michael Kay -- the longtime voice of the "Bronx Bombers" -- made an announcement that a "40-year fixture" in the area sports scene, Bob Trainor had passed away. Kay followed with a touching tribute to Trainor and offered condolences to "Bob's family and friends."
One problem. Trainor is apparently alive and well, according to WFAN sports reporter Mike Mancusco.
"Sad news," Kay said. "If you’ve ever been around a major league ballpark of any sporting events in New York ... you saw Bob Trainor there and he passed away today. 40-year fixture in all of the clubhouses, and our condolences go out to Bob’s family and friends."
Sunday's game between the Rays and Yankees was also memorable for a benches-clearing incident after New York third baseman Josh Donaldson took exception to an up-and-in pitch.
The Yankees enter action Tuesday with a five-game lead over the Rays for first place in the AL East. The advantage is a far cry from their biggest division lead of the season, when they were up 15 1/2 games in early July.
