Yankees' Zack Britton on Domingo German: 'You don't get to control who your teammates are'

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 MLB season serving a suspension following a domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend in September 2019. German is back with the Yankees at the start of spring training, and fellow pitcher Zack Britton doesn't seem like he'll be embracing his teammate's return with open arms.

Britton responded when asked about German, per Scott Thompson of SNY:

"That’s a tough question. I don’t think he owes anything to me. I think it’s off-the-field stuff that he needs to take care of. Sometimes you don’t get to control who your teammates are, and that’s the situation.

"I don’t agree with what he did. I don’t think it has any place in the game or off the field at all.

"My job is to go out there and pitch and do my job. So that’s kind of what my concern is right now. But [German] doesn’t owe me anything."

As Dan Martin reported for the New York Post, Yankees manager Aaron Boone, general manager Brian Cashman and bench coach Carlos Mendoza all spoke with German and "welcomed" the right-hander back to the active roster. Britton clearly isn't as forgiving, and one has to assume others in the clubhouse feel similarly as spring training gets underway.
