Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal seems to have avoided the worst-case scenario of a season-ending injury on Saturday night. Grandal suffered a left knee injury attempting to score on a ball hit into the outfield during the 7th inning of the ballgame.
According to a release from the Chicago White Sox, x-rays on Grandal’s knee were negative. While the injury looked rather gruesome and he was unable to put any weight on his leg as he was helped off the field, according to the team he did not suffer any structural damage on the play. According to the team’s press release, Grandal is currently suffering from inflammation in the knee due to hyperextension. How long this will keep Grandal out was definitely a thought on everyone’s mind.
A follow-up tweet from the White Sox stated that the preliminary expectation is that Yasmani Grandal is expected to return to play in just 10-14 days.
While it seems safe to say at this point Yasmani Grandal has avoided the worst-case scenario, we will have to wait and see how long this injury does in fact keep him out of the White Sox lineup. He is currently listed on the IL. Catcher Carlos Perez was called up from Triple-A Charlotte and will likely serve as a back-up catcher behind Seby Savala until Grandal returns.
