The New York Yankees are pushing to have another Yankees legend to join their broadcasts for 2024.
The New York Post reported on Tuesday that the YES Network is in discussions with former center fielder Bernie Williams about joining their broadcasts in an analyst role next season.
By adding Williams, Yes would add another commentator to their lineup to go along with long-time play-by-play announcer Michael Kay. YES’s roster of analysts includes David Cone, Paul O’Neill, John Flaherty, Jeff Nelson and Todd Frazier.
The Post also reported that Williams would be a candidate to work during YES’s pre-game and post-game coverage and indicated that Williams would start there before beginning any in-game work.
Williams has not done any television work since he officially retired in 2015. The classically trained guitarist released two albums during his baseball career and has leaned into his musical ability in his post-career philanthropy, which includes the national non-profit Little Kids Rock.
Williams’ No. 51 is retired and he has a plaque in Monument Park among other Yankees legends. He was the center fielder for four World Series championship teams and finished his career batting .297 with 287 home runs, 1,257 RBI, 1,366 runs, 449 doubles and a .990 field percentage.
Williams was also a five-time All-Star, won four Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, an American League batting title in 1998 and was the 1996 ALCS MVP.
At the end of his career he held the career postseason record for RBI with 80, was third all-time in postseason home runs with 22 and in games played with 121. He was also second in doubles (29), total hits (128), walks (71), total bases (223), and runs scored (83).
