The Atlanta Braves’ pitching staff has been desperate for arms throughout the entirety of the 2025 season, suffering injuries across both the rotation and the bullpen. Overall, the result has been disappointing, as Atlanta owns a team-wide 4.41 ERA—22nd in MLB.
The Braves currently have seven total pitchers on the injured list entering Wednesday, with three of them being relievers and four being starting pitchers. Atlanta has been scrambling, picking up several notable players who disappointed for other organizations in the second half, including Cal Quantrill and Alexis Diaz.
With the club pivoting toward a quick turnaround in 2026, the front office has given chances to just about any arm with big-league experience to carry them to the end of the season.
Ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Braves made a move on waivers, acquiring Carson Ragsdale from the Baltimore Orioles and optioning the right-handed pitcher to Triple-A.
To open space for the move, the Braves officially moved Jake Fraley to the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his season.
"Braves claimed RHP Carson Ragsdale off waivers from the Orioles and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, they transferred OF Jake Fraley to the 60-day injured list," wrote The Athletic's David O'Brien.

Ragsdale figures to handle low-leverage spots for Atlanta if he makes his way to the big-league level. The 27-year-old has appeared in just one major league game out of the bullpen, allowing eight earned runs over three innings for Baltimore.
As for Fraley, his move to the 60-day IL doesn’t necessarily reflect the severity of his injury.
He suffered a strained oblique while warming up for a pinch-hit appearance and was only expected to miss three weeks. But with just two remaining in the regular season, the Braves used the long-term designation to claim Ragsdale.
Fraley himself was a waiver wire pickup by Atlanta in August after failing to establish himself as a reliable outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds. The 30-year-old veteran did impress in nine games with the Braves, posting a .304 batting average. He’ll likely still have to compete for a roster spot next season.
