Austin Wells and Yankees Broadcaster Locked in a Food Fight

Yankees catcher Austin Wells is still settling into his first full season in the majors, but off the field, he’s already found a side gig as a blossoming food influencer.

Wells has launched a food-review Instagram account called “wells.ranked.burritos,” where he’s rating breakfast burritos served in visiting MLB clubhouses. What started as an inside joke at PNC Park on Friday morning has taken off far beyond the Yankees’ locker room. As of Sunday afternoon, Wells had racked up more than 57,000 followers in just under 48 hours.

“I thought it’d just be something the guys might follow,” Wells told the New York Post. “Now it’s kind of a thing.”

But there’s a new wrinkle. YES Network broadcaster Michael Kay is reviewing chicken tenders from ballparks around the league at the encouragement of his colleague, Meredith Marakovits.

When asked if he’s feeling the pressure from Kay’s growing presence, Wells told Brendan Kuty of The Athletic:

“A little bit. I did see some things. He has a way better profile picture than me. I’m going to have to talk to A.I. or something and maybe have them make me one. But I am a little worried. We’ll see how it goes.”

Kay posted his first review on Sunday afternoon, giving the chicken tenders in Pittsburgh a second chance. He had complained on air about the quality of the tenders he had on Friday, but he was impressed with Sunday’s tenders.

Wells has posted two reviews to date and the Yankees are only on their first road series of the season.
