Buster Posey named All-Star starter

We all knew it was coming, but now it’s official. San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been named an All-Star. He’ll be the starting catcher for the National League team in the July 13 game at Coors Field.

It’s the seventh time that Posey has made the All-Star team, and the first time since 2018. It comes during a resurgent season in which he’s having the best hitting line of his career at .330/.418/.560.

Posey was the only Giant named to the NL’s starting lineup, but it’s expected that shortstop Brandon Crawford (a two-time All-Star) and starting pitcher Kevin Gausman (who has not made an All-Star team) will join him as reserves.

With no All-Star Game in 2020, the last Giant to make the Midsummer Classic was reliever Will Smith in 2019. If Crawford and Gausman join Posey on the team, it will be the first time the Giants have had three All-Stars since 2016, when Posey was accompanied by Brandon Belt, Johnny Cueto, and Madison Bumgarner.
