The Chicago Cubs have lost seven games in a row and are scrambling to turn their fortunes around. Pedro Ramirez will make his first Major League start on Sunday as Craig Counsell continues to shuffled Chicago’s lineup in search of an answer.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, though, they have not been able to catch any breaks in terms of the health of their starting rotation. Indeed, many of their recent losses could have been avoided had they been able to have their preferred starters healthy and on the mound.
The reality, though, is that they do not have them, and Edward Cabrera is joining three other notable starting pitchers on the injured list.
Cabrera was only able to get through three innings in his previous start, a 5-0 Cubs loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He was removed from the game due to a blister on his throwing hand, and on Sunday was placed on the injured list with the same injury:

Cabrera is currently 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA in 10 starts this season. He was acquired by Chicago to boost their starting lineup during the off-season in a trade headlined by former top prospect Owen Caissie.
He will join fellow Cubs starters Justin Steele, Cade Horton, and Matthew Boyd on the injured list.
To make up for Cabrera’s absence, Chicago has called up Jordan Wicks to take his place on the roster. He is 0-2 with a 4.44 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Iowa so far in 2026. In 26 Major League games (17 starts), Wicks is 6-6 with a 5.21 ERA and one save.
Clearly, the Cubs are even more desperate for starting pitching now and have to be making calls around the league for who might be available.
