2024 might truly go down as the single greatest year of Los Angeles Dodgers megastar Shohei Ohtani's life.
Mere weeks after signing the largest contract in baseball history to join the Dodgers, Ohtani married ex-Japanese basketball star Mamiko Tanaka, then went on to lead the team to the best record in baseball, win the NL MVP Award and the World Series. But today's news might make all of those other accomplishments pale by comparison.
On Saturday, Ohtani announced that he and Mamiko are having a baby.
"Can't wait for the little rookie to join our family soon!" he posted on Instagram.
Fans and sports people on social media immediately went to the comments and replies to congratulate the baseball megastar on becoming a father:
"I am so thrilled for you two! Congratulations, and best wishes for your baby girl! Decoy (the dog) is going to be such a great sibling," one user wrote.
"A new friend for Decoy!!!" wrote another.
"Sweet! The puppy gets a new friend," a third remarked.
But most fans were focused on one thing. With Shohei Ohtani as their dad and a talented ex-basketball player as their mom, the child is destined for greatness in sports:
"Baby ohtani set to meet with mlb teams in LA upon arrival according to sources close to the situation. Word around the league is that The dodgers to be the favorites ohtani jr is going to like the winning culture the team has established and player development," one user remarked.
"Jeff Passan reporting the Dodgers have already signed baby Ohtani for $500 billion. Deferred, naturally," wrote another.
"If this kid decides they’re wanting to become an athlete, I think the genetics will be in their favor between one of the greatest baseball players to ever do it and a professional hooper," a third said.
You can hardly blame fans for being excited. Ohtani isn't just the best player in baseball today, he's accomplishing things that are putting him on a path to all-time greatness.
2024 was a great year for the Ohtani family. But 2025 might be even bigger for them.
