Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander was adamant about giving it another run in 2026. The future Hall of Famer surely has the skill, the tactics, and the experience, but staying healthy has been a huge problem.
The Tigers reunited with Verlander, hoping that he would turn things around for the team. Instead, he posted a miserable 12.27 ERA and was forced to be placed on the IL due to hip inflammation. The righty has made only one start for his team until now.
A few weeks ago, Justin Verlander started to throw bullpen sessions. However, the latest update has only brought bad news for the Detroit Tigers. With Tarik Skubal sidelined, it’s safe to say that the Tigers are struggling. An injured roster only makes things worse.
Manager A.J. Hinch shared a latest update on Verlander. It turns out that the veteran will need more time to progress. Hinch said he’s inching forward, but he’s not ready for competition.
“He’s inching forward more than sprinting forward. No steps back is a good thing. Do we want him to take a quantum leap? Yes. Is he ready for competition? No. Justin Verlander will throw in Baltimore, do another live BP next week,” Hinch said.

Verlander threw a simulated game recently, but surrendered three home runs. The simulation game will help him bring up the pitch count and build his stamina.
Verlander is already at the tail end of his career. Several pitchers have retired much before his age. At 43, he wants one more opportunity to win and hang up his gloves. The best place to do that is where he started out his career in Detroit.
This might be the last year for Justin Verlander to pitch in the majors. If he fails to perform well, teams will not consider giving him another opportunity for 2027.
