Detroit Tigers Rumors: Insider Reveals List Of Competitors Ready To Pursue Tarik Skubal

Tarik Skubal is widely considered the best starting pitcher in the MLB after taking the American League Cy Young Award for the past two seasons. The Detroit Tigers ace is currently in the final year of club control. With plenty of contenders keen to acquire Skubal as a rental, the Tigers may decide to offload the southpaw if they drop out of playoff contention by the trade deadline.

As per Mike Axisa of CBS Sports, Tarik Skubal will draw huge demand from contending teams when he returns from the IL. The 29-year-old left-hander underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow on May 6. Skubal would become the hottest commodity in the trade market if he continued to dominate for the Tigers after returning from his injury layoff.

“Assuming he returns from surgery without a hitch, Skubal would instantly become the best available pitcher and the best available player period at the trade deadline if the Tigers do put him on the market. Every contender—the Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, etc.—would make a run at him. The bidding war would be fierce,” Axisa wrote.

The Tigers have struggled since Tarik Skubal went on the IL, losing 14 of the last 16 games. As a result, they’re currently at the bottom of the AL Central standings with a 20-31 record.

Tigers To Keep Tarik Skubal If Playoff Hopes Remain Alive

According to MLB analyst Mike Axisa, the Detroit Tigers will only consider trading Tarik Skubal if their playoff hopes are completely doomed. If they remain with a decent chance of reaching the playoffs by the deadline, the Tigers will instead add pieces to their roster for a postseason push.

“Skubal will be a free agent after the season, and my sense is the Tigers will have to crash hard in these next 65 games to entertain trading him at the deadline. If they’re still 2 ½ games back on Aug. 3, I think they keep him, add to the roster around him, and make a push for a postseason spot,” he wrote.

Tarik Skubal posted 1.6 bWAR for Detroit over seven starts before landing on the IL. He pitched 45.1 innings with a 2.70 ERA and 45 strikeouts. The Tigers expect their ace to return sometime in June.
