Dodgers Legend Orel Hershiser Shares Thoughts on Dustin May in First Start

The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a perfect start this season, and most recently, their seventh consecutive victory was aided by starter Dustin May.

May has dealt with serious injuries and bizarre setbacks on the road to his return to the mound. First, he tore a flexor tendon in his arm back in May of 2023 and had to miss all of that season and was on track to return in 2024. Then, while out with his wife, he suffered a torn esophagus from eating a piece of lettuce.

He finally returned to the mound and threw five innings and struck out six while not giving up any earned runs.

Dodgers franchise icon Orel Hershiser spoke after the team's broadcast on SNLA about May's outing:

"Twenty-two and a half months to wait to get back on a big-league mound in a regular season game," said Hershiser. "And he strikes out the side [in the first], tears in his wife's eyes, parents in the stands, and I'm sure it was a lot of work for him to keep the emotions in."

May is receiving a resounding amount of support from everyone in the Dodgers organization for his resilience and determination to get back healthy.

The 27-year-old starter has an electric repertoire that features a two-seam fastball with incredible movement, and a long, lanky delivery. There has never been doubt about May's ability to get out and be a formidable starter, but he has the same track record of dealing with major injuries. He currently occupies the Dodgers' fifth rotation spot and will be a pitcher to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
